Il talentuoso Rome Streetz è stato in Italia per una tripletta di concerti fenomenali nelle città di Milano, Bologna e Roma (in ordine cronologico): la prima tappa italiana del Noise Kandy 5 tour del rapper, svoltasi a Milano, è avvenuta nella serata tra un giovedì e un venerdì e, proprio mentre l’artista stava performando, l’album per cui il tour è stato creato è stato pubblicato su tutti i servizi streaming.
Il momento della pubblicazione è stato magico: allo scoccare della mezzanotte, Rome Streetz ha smesso di rappare e, insieme al pubblico, è andato sul suo servizio streaming di fiducia per controllare l’effettiva pubblicazione del progetto. Il concerto si è fermato per qualche minuto per poi andare avanti con una dose di vero hip-hop.
Il giorno successivo al concerto tenutosi al BIKO, Rome Streetz ha accettato di fare due chiacchiere riguardanti il nuovo album, la sua carriera e molto altro ancora.
La nostra intervista esclusiva a Rome Streetz, fuori ora con Noise Kandy 5
Hi man! I’d like to start the interview by asking you about Kiss The Ring, your magnum opus. Did you expect the success it had when it came out while you were recording it?
Rome Streetz: «I didn’t necessarily expect it to be like it was, but I just knew that it was gonna be big. Like I knew it was gonna do something, you know what I’m sayin’? I just didn’t know what. There’s kind of no way to expect it, you can’t really tell. It’s always a mistery until it plays out. But I’m happy with it!»
Ciao Rome! Vorrei iniziare l’intervista parlando di Kiss The Ring, la tua opera magna. Ti saresti aspettato che avrebbe avuto un successo così grande alla pubblicazione durante il processo di registrazione?
Rome Streetz: «Non mi aspettavo certo qualcosa di così grande, però in qualche modo sentivo che avrebbe avuto successo. Era come se sapessi che avrebbe smosso gli animi, capisci che intendo? Non sapevo bene come. Non c’è un vero modo per avere delle aspettative, in questi casi non si può mai sapere. È sempre un mistero fino al momento in cui succede. Ma sono davvero felice per com’è andata!»
Yes, it did really well! Now I’d like to switch the topic on the new album Noise Kandy 5, which is out now and it actually dropped last night. I was there at the concert last night in Milan and it was great! What were your feelings tonight while you were rapping on stage and the album dropped in that very moment? Did you ever experience something like that?
Rome Streetz: «I was excited! I’ve never really experienced before something where I was performing and the album comes out at the same time, so that was a first time experience. I was just hyped because the last time I performed in Milan it was crazy! So I knew that the show was gonna be crazy again and I was just excited for it. I was just feeling really good, the best that I could feel on stage. Milan always gives me great energy and one of the best shows I’ve ever done was in Milan! I knew it was gonna be good and I’m happy it was.»
So the first time you’ve ever experienced something like this was tonight in Milan, out of your country.
Rome Streetz: «Yes, it was and it was great!»
Ora vorrei spostare l’attenzione sul nuovo album Noise Kandy 5, che è fuori ora. Io c’ero al concerto di ieri sera a Milano ed è stato fantastico: quali sono state le tue sensazioni nel momento in cui stavi rappando sul palco sapendo che l’album era appena uscito in quel momento? Hai mai avuto un’esperienza simile?
Rome Streetz: «Ero felicissimo! Non ho mai avuto un’esperienza del genere prima, in cui io mi esibivo e l’album usciva nello stesso momento, questa è stata la prima volta. Ero emozionato perchè l’ultima volta che mi sono esibito a Milano è stato pazzesco! Quindi sapevo che lo show sarebbe stato incredibile ancora una volta ed ero emozionato per questo. Mi sentivo davvero bene, ero al mio massimo su quel palco. Milano mi dà sempre una bella energia e uno degli show migliori che abbia mai fatto è stato proprio a Milano! Sapevo che sarebbe andato bene e sono felice che sia stato così»
Quindi la prima volta che è successa una cosa del genere è stata stanotte a Milano, fuori dal tuo Paese.
Rome Streetz: «Esattamente ed è stato grandioso!»
What was your reaction when last night you performed for the first time the songs on the new album that nobody had ever heard before?
Rome Streetz: «It was dope, because one thing about performing songs that the crowd had never heard before is that you kind of get to see the reaction. If the song ain’t good, you’re gonna know, ‘cause they’re gonna act like it’s not good. If the song is good you’re gonna see people react like “Oh s**t!”. So you know, that’s always a good thing to just see people’s reaction, to know if the song is fire and if they like it. If it’s their first time hearing it and they like it, they’re gon’ really play it afterwards.»
Qual è stata la tua reazione nei momenti in cui hai performato le canzoni dell’album appena uscito per la prima volta di fronte a un pubblico che non le aveva ancora sentite prima?
Rome Streetz: «È stato forte, perchè una cosa di performare canzoni che il pubblico non ha mai sentito prima è che tu puoi vedere la loro reazione. Se la canzone non è bella, lo sai subito, perchè loro te lo faranno capire immediatamente. Se la canzone invece piace, vedrai le persone reagire dicendo “Oh me**a!”. Quindi sai, è sempre un’ottima cosa vedere la reazione delle persone per sapere se la canzone è bella e se piace. Se è la prima volta che la ascoltano dal vivo e a loro piace, puoi star certo che la andranno a riascoltare successivamente»
On your announcement post for the album on your IG, you wrote a caption that said that this new album is a collection of songs that you’ve recorded in the last year and a half. Where did you record those songs and what was the recording process behind them?
Rome Streetz: «A lot of those songs were made during the pandemic when we were on lockdown. A lot of them were made before I even put out Kiss The Ring, while some of them were made very recently, like a couple months ago. The Noise Kandy series is something to let people who listen to it know that Rome is really good at rapping. It’s just a display of greatness, that’s how I look at it. I made it because I felt like people wasn’t giving me the respect I wanted to receive at that time, so that’s kind of why I made Noise Kandy. There was part 1 to begin and then it just took off, now we’re at part 5! When I made that type of sh*t it was just to go crazy on the mic and to show that I’m a great MC.»
Nel post di annuncio del nuovo album sul tuo profilo Instagram, hai scritto una descrizione in cui dicevi che l’album è una collezione di brani registrati nell’ultimo anno e mezzo. Dove e in che modo li hai registrati?
Rome Streetz: «Molte di quelle canzoni sono state registrate durante la pandemia e il lockdown. Tante fra queste sono state fatte prima ancora che io pubblicassi Kiss The Ring, mentre altre sono state create più recentemente, tipo due mesi fa. La serie di Noise Kandy è qualcosa che faccio per far capire alle persone che l’ascoltano che Rome è davvero bravo a rappare. È una dimostrazione di grandezza, così la vedo io. L’ho fatta perchè sentivo che le persone non mi davano il rispetto che volevo ricevere a quei tempi, ecco perchè. Abbiamo iniziato con il primo e poi da lì tutto ha preso il via, ora siamo alla parte 5! Quando ho fatto quella me**a era solo per dare il massimo sul microfono e dimostrare che fossi un grande MC»
And you did it! One question about my favourite song on the album, Fire At Ya Idle Mind with Joey Badass. How did the song and the collaboration with Joey come to life?
Rome Streetz: «Wavy Da Ghawd, who’s my producer, sent me that beat and it was really really crazy. I had the song with just my part and the hook for a while. I wanted to put other rappers on it, but it just never worked out. Me and my manager Coach were having a conversation and he said “Bro, you should put Joey Badass on it.” and I’m like “Let’s do it! If we can get him…” and he was like “Yeah, I know him.”. You know, him and Joey Badass have known each other for a long time, so he just asked him, Joey said yes, so we sent it to him and then it happened!»
Have the two of you ever met?
Rome Streetz: «Yes, we met. We actually have the video for the song together coming out today! (the day the interview occurred, ed)»
E ce l’hai fatta! Una domanda sulla mia canzone preferita del nuovo album, Fire At Ya Idle Mind con Joey Badass. Come è nata la canzone e la collaborazione con Joey?
Rome Streetz: «Wavy Da Ghawd, che è il mio produttore, mi ha inviato quella base ed era davvero pazzesca. Ho avuto la canzone con solo la mia parte e il ritornello per un po’ di tempo. Volevo metterci altri rappers sopra, ma non è mai andato nulla in porto. Un giorno io e il mio manager Coach stavamo avendo una conversazione e mi ha detto “Fratello, dovresti metterci Joey Badass.” e io gli dico “Facciamolo! Dobbiamo riuscirci però…” e lui è tipo “Sì, lo conosco.”. Sai, lui e Joey Badass si conoscono da molto tempo, quindi lui gliel’ha chiesto, Joey ha detto sì, così gli abbiamo inviato la canzone ed è successo!»
Vi siete mai incontrati?
Rome Streetz: «In realtà sì. Abbiamo il video della nostra canzone che esce proprio oggi! (il giorno dell’intervista, ndr)»
There are a couple of songs on the new album that are produced by Evidence, how did you manage to have him as a producer?
Rome Streetz: «Well, he reached out to me on Instagram first, you know, just saying that he likes my music. Then, when I went to LA, I actually went to his house. Planet Asia brought me to his house one time. There we recorded and we’ve just been cool ever since. He just sent me some beats and I just recorded on them. Me and him have more songs too.»
Great! New songs where he raps too or just produces?
Rome Streetz: «So far records that he just produces, but I might be able to get him to rap on some.»
Ci sono un paio di canzoni prodotte da Evidence sul nuovo album, come sei riuscito ad averlo come produttore?
Rome Streetz: «Beh, la prima volta che siamo stati in contatto è stato quando lui mi ha contattato su Instagram solo per dire che gli piaceva la mia musica. Poi quando sono andato a Los Angeles sono anche stato a casa sua. Planet Asia mi ha portato a casa sua una volta. Lì abbiamo registrato qualcosa e da quel momento siamo diventati amici. Ogni tanto mi manda delle basi e io ci registro sopra. Abbiamo più canzoni insieme di quelle pubblicate.»
Grandi! Canzoni dove lui rappa o produce soltanto?
Rome Streetz: «Fin’ora brani in cui ha solo prodotto, ma potrei riuscire a farlo rappare su qualcuno di questi.»
You’ve got more legendary collaborations in your bag, you’ve got Method Man and DJ Premier for example. What is it like to have such greatness in your catalogue?
Rome Streetz: «It’s dope! You know, I’m grateful to just being able to do these things. Sometimes I don’t even realize I’ve done so many things because I’m always doing something else. It’s just amazing because I grew up listening to DJ Premier and Method Man, so for them to actually like my music enough to wanting to make music with me is everything, it’s the best feeling in the world!»
Hai molte altre collaborazioni leggendarie nel tuo catalogo, come per esempio Method Man e DJ Premier tra gli altri. Come ti senti ad avere tanta grandezza nella tua discografia?
Rome Streetz: «È fortissimo! Sai, sono grato di poter fare certe cose. Certe volte non realizzo nemmeno di aver fatto così tanta roba perchè penso subito alla prossima cosa da fare. È solo fantastico perchè io sono cresciuto ascoltando DJ Premier e Method Man, quindi il fatto che loro abbiano amato la mia musica fino al punto di voler fare musica con me è tutto, è la sensazione migliore del mondo!»
On the track with DJ Premier, titled Runway, there’s also Westside Gunn, who’s your mentor too. What’s your relationship with him like?
Rome Streetz: «He’s like my older brother in a sense. We just chill with each other, he is mad cool. All we do is laugh, make jokes and smoke weed (laughs, ed).»
Sulla traccia con DJ Premier, intitolata Runway, c’è anche Westside Gunn, il tuo mentore. Come descriveresti la vostra amicizia?
Rome Streetz: «Lui è il mio fratello maggiore in un certo senso. Ci rilassiamo molto insieme, lui è un tipo figo e tranquillo. Tutto ciò che facciamo è ridere, fare battute e fumare erba (ride, ndr).»
How did he discover you and sign you to his label Griselda Records?
Rome Streetz: «He just listens to a lot of sh*t, so he probably just heard my music on the radio. ‘Cause you know, we’re all on the same team, so sometimes on social media somebody might be making a post about a guy rapping and then making a post about me, so he might have just heard my name or have seen my album covers. Before we actually made music together, I met him at some shows and he probably might have heard from me in those occasions. Then he just reached out to me one day and said “Yo, let’s do some music!” and then it just went from there.»
Come ti ha scoperto e scritturato per la sua etichetta Griselda Records?
Rome Streetz: «Lui ascolta sempre tanta roba, quindi potrebbe avermi sentito in radio. Perchè sai, noi siamo tutti nella stessa squadra, quindi magari ogni tanto qualcuno sui social media fa un post su un tizio che rappa e un altro giorno lo fa su di me, quindi potrebbe aver sentito il mio nome o visto le copertine dei miei album da lì. Noi ci siamo anche incontrati durante alcuni concerti prima ancora di fare musica insieme, quindi potrebbe avermi sentito in quelle occasioni. Un giorno mi contatta e mi dice “Yo, facciamo un po’ di musica insieme!” e da lì è partito tutto»
Let’s move to the mainstream questions, where does the name Rome Streetz come from?
Rome Streetz: «My first name is Jerome, so Rome is my nickname. Then one of my friends named me Rome Streetz because when I was young I lived in a lot of places and I moved around a lot, so I was “roaming the streets” and he said that my name should be Rome Streetz from the moment he said that.»
So it has nothing to do with Rome, the Italian city.
Rome Streetz: «No, I’ve never been to Rome, but I’m going to be there in a couple of days for the tour!»
Spostiamoci alle domande più scontate, da dove viene il nome Rome Streetz?
Rome Streetz: «Il mio nome è Jerome, quindi Rome è il mio soprannome. Poi uno dei miei amici mi ha chiamato Rome Streetz perchè quando ero piccolo ho vissuto in tanti posti diversi e mi muovevo spesso per le strade, quindi “vagabondavo per le strade”, dal momento in cui ha detto quella frase io sono diventato Rome Streetz per lui.»
Quindi non c’entra nulla con la città di Roma.
Rome Streetz: «No, non sono mai stato a Roma, ma ci andrò tra un paio di giorni proprio per il tour!»
What’s your top 5 rappers of all time?
Rome Streetz: «Top 5 rappers of all time… This is in no order and this changes a lot, but I would say Biggie, Nas, JAY-Z, MF DOOM and… Rome Streetz (laughs, ed)!»
Qual è la tua top 5 rappers di tutti i tempi?
Rome Streetz: «Top 5 rappers di sempre… Non è in ordine e cambia spesso, ma direi Biggie, Nas, JAY-Z, MF DOOM e… Rome Streetz (ride, ndr)!»
It’s fair! You’re on tour right now and you’re having three stops in Italy. You’ve been here before as you told me, do you like our country?
Rome Streetz: «Yeah, I love it. The crowd is crazy and the energy is amazing. The only thing is that everytime I come around here I don’t stay for that long so I’m not able to see everything I want to see, but I just like how it is out here. The weather is nice, the food is good and everyone that comes to my shows loves my music!»
È giusto! Tu sei in tour adesso e farai anche tre date in Italia. Sei già stato altre volte qui come mi hai detto prima, ti piace il nostro Paese?
Rome Streetz: «Sì, lo adoro. Il pubblico è folle e l’energia è fantastica. L’unico problema è che, ogni volta che sono qui, resto sempre per poco tempo quindi non riesco a vedere tutto ciò che vorrei, però adoro questo posto. Il tempo è bello, il cibo è buono e le persone che vengono ai miei concerti amano la mia musica!»
Do you listen to any Italian artists? Or have you ever collaborated with some of them or are you going to do that?
Rome Streetz: «I haven’t heard any Italian rappers before. I think I may have collaborated with some Italian producers but I can’t remember their names on the top of my head. I wanna hear some more Italian stuff.»
Ascolti artisti italiani? O hai mai collaborato con qualcuno di loro o lo farai?
Rome Streetz: «Non ho mai ascoltato rapper italiani prima. Potrei aver collaborato con dei produttori italiani ma adesso non ricordo i loro nomi. Voglio comunque ascoltare più roba italiana.»
