Tre leggende dell’hip-hop americano hanno unito le forze per un tour europeo in onore della carriera dell’iconico duo dei Mobb Deep. Il loro sodalizio artistico in realtà dura da anni ed è contemporaneo alla creazione stessa del duo, però adesso questo trio, composto da Havoc, unico membro originale dei Mobb Deep, Big Noyd, vecchio collaboratore del gruppo, e il producer DJ L.E.S, gira il mondo ufficialmente sotto il nome di Mobb Deep in una nuova formazione.
Quest’ultimo tour europeo li ha portati a Milano per un indimenticabile concerto all’insegna del vero hip-hop nella location del Biko Club. Organizzato da Clockwork Music Inc e da Soulfood Promotions, il live aveva l’obiettivo di festeggiare i 30 anni dell’album di debutto dei Mobb Deep, intitolato Juvenile Hell, di omaggiare il compianto Prodigy e di celebrare i 50 anni del nostro genere preferito, l’hip-hop.
Durante tutto il set, durato circa un’ora e mezza e portato avanti fino a dopo la mezzanotte, i tre pesi massimi del genere hanno performato dal vivo alcune delle hit più importanti della loro discografia tra cui ricordiamo Survival Of The Fittest in apertura, Hell On Earth, Temperature’s Rising con un’incredibile strofa performata acapella da Havoc, Thug Muzik, Drink Away The Pain e l’iconica Shook Ones pt. 2 in chiusura.
In seguito a questo incredibile show all’insegna di barre di puro rap, i Mobb Deep ci hanno anche concesso un’intervista offrendo molti spunti interessanti da parte di tre voci che hanno scritto un capitolo di storia del genere hip-hop.

Hello guys! I’d like to start the interview by talking about the tour, these concerts are being held around Europe in order to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Juvenile Hell, Mobb Deep’s debut album. Tell me about that time and the recording process behind that album, how do you look back at that time right now?
Havoc: «You know, looking back at that album Juvenile Hell, that was the first time I was professionally recording an album. It was the first time we have ever recorded with a record company and a contract, so it was really exciting! We were really immatures in the game, we didn’t know what to expect from this business, but we were excited and that’s how we approached the album, we were just happy to make music. You know, that was my first time producing and I produced maybe only two or three songs on the album. Everything was just new to us and we were thankful for even having the chance to make music.»
Ciao a tutti! Vorrei iniziare l’intervista chiedendovi del tour, questi concerti in tutta Europa hanno l’obiettivo primario di celebrare i 30 anni di Juvenile Hell, l’album di debutto dei Mobb Deep. Parlatemi di quel periodo e del processo creativo dietro l’album, quali sono le vostre riflessioni guardando indietro a quei tempi?
Havoc: «Sai, pensando a quell’album Juvenile Hell, quella per me era la prima volta in studio di registrazione per un progetto discografico. Era la prima volta che abbiamo registrato sotto contratto per una casa discografica, quindi era davvero eccitante! Eravamo alle prime armi in questo business e non sapevamo cosa aspettarci, ma eravamo eccitati e abbiamo approcciato l’album in questa maniera, eravamo semplicemente felici di fare musica. Sai, quella era anche la prima volta da produttore per me e ho prodotto forse solo due o tre canzoni su quell’album. Era tutto nuovo per noi ed eravamo grati anche solo per l’opportunità di poter fare musica.»
I was just about to ask you about your production on that record, in particular about the choice of producing just a couple of tracks on Juvenile Hell but then ending up producing almost the whole thing on The Infamous album two years later, what was the choice behind this switch?
Havoc: «Well, in the beginning, like I said, on the first album I was a new producer, I didn’t really know what I was doing and I was still learning. In The Infamous album I was still learning too, but given that we didn’t have the success that we wanted on the first album and I didn’t produce a lot of it, I said “Next time, if we fail, I want it to be my fault, I want to take the blame, I want to take the matters into my own hands”. So for The Infamous album I said “I’m going to do most of the work!”»
Stavo infatti per farti una domanda sulla tua produzione in quell’album, in particolare vorrei chiederti le motivazioni dietro la scelta di produrre solo un paio di tracce in Juvenile Hell per poi passare a produrre quasi tutto l’album successivo The Infamous due anni dopo, cosa ti ha portato a fare questa scelta?
Havoc: «Beh, all’inizio, come ho detto prima, nel primo album ero un produttore alle prime armi, non sapevo bene cosa fare e stavo ancora imparando. In The Infamous stavo anche imparando, però dato che non abbiamo avuto il successo sperato per il primo album e io non ne avevo prodotto la gran parte, mi sono detto “La prossima volta, se falliamo, voglio che sia colpa mia, voglio prendermi tutta la colpa, voglio avere tutto sotto controllo”. Quindi per The Infamous ho detto “Farò io gran parte del lavoro!”»

You’re touring right now all together as Mobb Deep, how are you guys planning to carry on the legacy of this legendary group?
Big Noyd: «I think Mobb Deep has set a stone as Havoc and Prodigy, but it’s always been affiliated to The Infamous Mob, Big Noyd and producers like DJ L.E.S. We’re just going to continue the work, ‘cause we are professionals at this point, so we are just going to keep on going hard like we always did, we’ll just keep it real with the music, you know what I mean?»
DJ L.E.S: «We’re going to put out new music and if there are new artists that can fall in our line, we’ll work with them, so we’ll keep it going!”»
Siete in tour adesso tutti insieme sotto il nome di Mobb Deep: come pensate di portare avanti il nome di questo gruppo leggendario in futuro?
Big Noyd: «Io penso che i Mobb Deep nella formazione originale di Havoc e Prodigy siano una pietra miliare del genere, però loro sono sempre stati affiliati alla Infamous Mob, a Big Noyd e a produttori come DJ L.E.S. Noi continueremo il loro lavoro, perchè siamo professionisti a questo punto, continueremo a giocare duro come abbiamo sempre fatto e saremo onesti nella nostra musica.»
DJ L.E.S: «Noi pubblicheremo nuova musica e, se ci saranno nuovi artisti che rispecchieranno il nostro schema, noi lavoreremo anche con loro, andremo avanti!»
So are you going to put out new music as Mobb Deep or just co-signing and collaborating with new artists?
Havoc: «So, as far as the Mobb Deep album, I have to work with Prodigy’s estate in order to acquire any of the verses that he might have. When we’ll put out the album, of course it’s going to be me and Prodigy, then you’ll hear Big Noyd rapping on the album as usual, but maybe also some surprise guests and features, you never know. I want to!»
Quindi pubblicherete altri album come Mobb Deep o vi limiterete a lavorare con nuovi artisti?
Havoc: «Allora, per quanto riguarda il nuovo album dei Mobb Deep, io devo lavorare con chi detiene i diritti della musica di Prodigy affinchè io possa acquisire tutti i versi che potrebbe averci lasciato. Quando pubblicheremo l’album, ovviamente ci saremo io e Prodigy in primis, poi sentirete anche rappare Big Noyd come sempre, ma forse ci sarà anche qualche ospite a sorpresa, chissà. Io voglio farlo!»
We all want to, fans are waiting for it! About the tour, I was there last night at your concert and it was crazy! I would like to hear a feedback from you guys about the show. Did you like it? Did you enjoy the energy of the crowd?
DJ L.E.S: «Yes, we loved the energy! When you come out on stage, no matter how many people are there, it could be 100 or 2000 people, it’s the same reaction. The music is in their soul and they feel Mobb Deep records, that’s why we love them and we love performing.»
Big Noyd: «I’ve appreciated it! Anytime that we get a reaction and people show up to support Mobb Deep we’re always grateful. The energy was off the chain last night!»
Per quanto riguarda il tour, io c’ero ieri sera al vostro concerto ed è stato incredibile! Vorrei una vostra opinione sullo show. Vi è piaciuto performare in Italia? Avete apprezzato l’energia della gente?
DJ L.E.S: «Sì, abbiamo amato l’energia del posto! Quando sali sul palco, non importa quante persone ci siano a vederti, possono essere 100 o 2000, la reazione è la stessa. La musica è nelle loro anime ed entrano in contatto con le canzoni dei Mobb Deep, ecco perchè adoriamo il pubblico e ci piace performare davanti a loro.»
Big Noyd: «Ho apprezzato molto lo show di ieri sera! Ogni volta che abbiamo una reazione da parte del pubblico che esce a supportare i Mobb Deep siamo molto grati. L’energia ieri sera era su tutto un altro livello!»

Now, first of all, R.I.P. Prodigy, I’d like to know how are you planning to carry on his legacy as a solo artist. I know that there have been a couple of posthumous albums released by his estate, but how are you going to carry it on?
Havoc: «As far as carrying on Prodigy’s legacy, I can at least always mention his name and make sure that nobody forgets him, in the simplest form, constantly reminding everybody that it’s Prodigy forever! I’ll do whatever I can to make sure that his legacy is there. When I make sure that Mobb Deep’s legacy is written in stone, I also make sure that Prodigy’s legacy is written in stone, ‘cause we were one thing…»

Ora, innanzitutto R.I.P. Prodigy, vorrei sapere come pianificate di portare avanti la sua carriera come artista solista. So che la sua agenzia ha rilasciato alcuni album postumi, ma voi cosa farete?
Havoc: «Per quanto riguarda la legacy di Prodigy, il minimo che posso fare è menzionare sempre il suo nome essendo sicuro che nessuno lo dimentichi mai, nella forma più semplice, ricordando costantemente a tutti che è Prodigy per sempre! Farò tutto ciò che è necessario per mantenere intatto il suo lascito. Quando porto avanti l’eredità dei Mobb Deep, porto avanti anche quella di Prodigy, perchè eravamo una cosa sola…»
Last night, and during the tour in general, you represented the hip-hop genre. This year hip-hop approaches 50, so what are your thoughts on hip-hop after 50 years?
DJ L.E.S: «You’ve got to think about this being a different time, it’s 2023 and the first Mobb Deep album came out in 1993, so we’re in different times. We love music and what’s going on with it now and I think that people haven’t forgotten about Mobb Deep records ‘cause when they come on they’re always like “OH OH!”. Music has changed and it’s going to keep changing, we’re just going to keep doing what we do and keepin’ it real with hip-hop. We don’t have to make commercial pop record, because they’re going to be pop by themselves, they’re going to be popular because the people’s going to love it.»
Big Noyd: «Oh man, that means a lot to me. Personally I grew up as a fan of hip-hop, at first I wasn’t even considering about being an artist. I used to write down some of the lyrics of my favorite rappers back then, so 50 years later into the game I’m so happy for it and I believe that, because of artists like Mobb Deep we could go on with hip-hop for another 50 years. You know what I mean? I appreciate it very much!»
Al concerto di ieri sera, e in generale durante tutto il tour, avete rappresentato il genere hip-hop. Quest’anno l’hip-hop compie 50 anni, quali sono le vostre riflessioni sul genere dopo 50 anni?
DJ L.E.S: «Devi pensare che adesso siamo in un tempo completamente diverso, è il 2023 e il primo album dei Mobb Deep è uscito nel 1993, davvero altri tempi. Amiamo la musica e come si sta evolvendo e credo che le persone non abbiano dimenticato le canzoni dei Mobb Deep perchè ogni volta che le suoniamo tutti urlano! La musica è cambiata e continuerà a cambiare, noi continueremo semplicemente a fare ciò che abbiamo sempre fatto e manterremo la nostra integrità nell’hip-hop. Non abbiamo bisogno di fare brani commerciali pop, perchè i nostri brani sono già pop di per sè, saranno popolari perchè la gente li adorerà.»
Big Noyd: «Amico, significa tanto per me. Personalmente sono cresciuto come un fan dell’hip-hop, all’inizio non avevo neanche considerato l’idea di diventare un artista. A quei tempi riscrivevo i testi dei miei rapper preferiti, quindi ora, dopo 50 anni sono davvero felice che l’hip-hop sia arrivato a questo punto e penso che, grazie ad artisti come i Mobb Deep, l’hip-hop possa andare ancora avanti per almeno altri 50 anni. Lo apprezzo tantissimo!»
What are your thoughts on this new generation of rappers, who are your favorite ones?
Havoc: «Oh man, I guess I’ve got one or two favorites, but I can’t really say their names. I will definitely have to mention Conway and the whole Griselda group, I definitely have to give them props for hitting that underground tune. I’ve got good hopes for hip-hop, I feel like it’s still moving in the right direction.»
Qual è la vostra opinione su questa nuova generazione di rapper? Chi sono i vostri preferiti?
Havoc: «Amico, ne ho uno o due preferiti, ma non ricordo bene i loro nomi. Devo certamente menzionare Conway e tutto il gruppo Griselda, devo riconoscere i loro meriti nella scena underground. Ho buone speranze per l’hip-hop, sento che si sta ancora muovendo nella direzione giusta.»
Now let’s go with a mainstream question, what are your top 5s rappers of all time (to Havoc and Big Noyd ndr) and your favorite producers (to DJ L.E.S. ndr)?
Havoc: «(laughs ndr) It’s impossible, cousin. You can’t please everybody, so I’ll say Biggie, Nas, JAY-Z, Prodigy and Rakim.»
Big Noyd: «For me Biggie’s up there, then Nas, Mobb Deep, you know I grew up listening to EPMD and even Salt-N-Pepa as an artist. They were amazing and they made me want to rap.»
DJ L.E.S: «My favorite producer is Dr. Dre hands down. He’s the GOAT, then I would have to say Large Professor, I would have to say Premier, then I would have to put Havoc there ‘cause he’s definitely one of my favorites…»
Havoc: «You should put yourself in there, then.»
DJ L.E.S: «I can’t vote for myself, but I’ll put myself there (laughs ndr).»

Big Noyd: «Per me lì c’è Biggie, poi Nas, Mobb Deep, sai che sono cresciuto ascoltando gli EPMD e metterei anche le Salt-N-Pepa. Loro erano fantastici e mi hanno fatto venire voglia di iniziare a rappare.»
DJ L.E.S: «Il mio produttore preferito è Dr. Dre a mani basse. Lui è il più grande di sempre, poi direi Large Professor, direi Premier, poi ci metterei anche Havoc perchè è uno dei miei preferiti di sempre…»
Havoc: «Dovresti metterci dentro anche te stesso allora.»
DJ L.E.S: «Non posso votare per me stesso, ma lo farò lo stesso (ride ndr).»
Your production on Illmatic is incredible, you should put yourself there (referred to DJ L.E.S.).
Do you guys like Italy? Have you ever been here before for live sets and do you listen to any Italian artists?
Havoc: «I heard the music but I never knew the names of the artists. Unfortunately they don’t say who that is and we don’t get the chance to know. Everytime we come to Europe and Italy in particular, we meet up with certain artists from the area and I think we did one or two collabs with a few of them. You always can see the passion in the artists from Italy when you come here. At least, I see it, when I speak from artist to artist, even though I might not understand what they are saying, I can tell by their flows that they’re passionate about it.»

Vi piace l’Italia? Siete mai stati qui e avete mai ascoltato artisti italiani?
Havoc: «Ho ascoltato la musica ma non ho mai saputo i nomi degli artisti. Purtroppo non dicono mai chi sono e quindi non abbiamo la possibilità di saperlo. Ogni volta che veniamo in Europa e soprattutto in Italia, incontriamo tanti artisti del posto e abbiamo anche fatto una o due collaborazioni con alcuni di loro. Riesci sempre a vedere la passione negli artisti italiani ogni volta che vieni qui. Almeno, io la vedo, parlando da artista ad artista, anche se non capisco ciò che dicono, riesco a captare la passione dal loro flow.»
What about your own careers? Are you going to release some solo material or just to work as a group? What are your future plans?
Big Noyd: «Well, right now, after the tour, we’ll just get back to the US. Me and Havoc are working on a project together with some production by L.E.S. on it as well, of course. For me that is the plan right now for starting to get back in the game. That’s my priority.»
DJ L.E.S: «Havoc is producing on that record, too. Plus he’s got some projects coming out with other artists. He has an album with Styles P out now and I think there’s something coming out with Method Man, too.»
Havoc: «Yes, I’m producing on the record with Noyd and I have an album coming out with Method Man.»
Per quanto riguarda le vostre carriere da solisti, pubblicherete del materiale per conto vostro o lavorerete ancora come un gruppo? Quali sono i vostri piani futuri?
Big Noyd: «Adesso, dopo la fine del tour, torneremo negli USA. Io e Havoc stiamo lavorando ad un album insieme che ovviamente avrà anche delle produzioni di L.E.S. Per me questo è il piano adesso per tornare sulla scena. Quella è la mia priorità.»
DJ L.E.S: «Havoc produrrà anche in quel disco. Lui sta anche lavorando a progetti con altri artisti. Ha un album con Styles P che è fuori ora e ha anche qualcosa in arrivo con Method Man.»
Havoc: «Sì, produrrò sull’album con Noyd e ho un album in arrivo con Method Man.»
A joint album with Method Man? I’ll be the first to listen to it (everyone laughs,ed ndr)! About production (referred to DJ L.E.S., ed), how did you develop your production skills through time?
DJ L.E.S: «Well, we’ve grown and technology has grown twice as fast as us. With that being said, it just makes it easier to do more things faster than it used to be back in the days. Technology is like a machine and you have to be like a machine, too.»
Un album con Method Man? Sarò il primo a volerlo ascoltare (ridono tutti, ndr)! Parlando di produzione (riferito a DJ L.E.S., ndr), come hai sviluppato le tue abilità di produzione in tutti questi anni?
DJ L.E.S: «Sai, noi siamo cresciuti ma la tecnologia è cresciuta al doppio della nostra velocità. Detto questo, ci rende tutto più facile e più veloce di come lo facevamo prima. La tecnologia è molto macchinosa e anche tu devi essere una macchina.»
Havoc, you’re so versatile as a producer, the first thing that comes to my mind right now is your work on Kanye West’s TLOP album in 2016. How do you approach recording for different artists and how do you experiment?
Havoc: «Well, you know, a lot of times I try not to think about the artist, but then it’s impossible not to think about the artists when they ask for the track, so I think about day one. I think about Mobb Deep’s sound and I think about the artists and what they’ve done, then I do a mix up of the two.»
Havoc, tu sei un produttore molto versatile, la prima cosa che mi viene in mente è la tua produzione sull’album TLOP di Kanye West nel 2016. Come approcci il processo creativo per artisti così diversi e come sperimenti?
Havoc: «Sai, spesso cerco di non pensare all’artista, ma poi mi accorgo che è impossibile non pensare all’artista dopo che ti chiede la traccia, perciò penso agli inizi. Penso al sound dei Mobb Deep e penso a quello che ha fatto l’artista nella sua carriera, poi faccio un mix delle due cose.»
You said that technology is developing very fast and many artists are recording through their phones sending voicemails. Do you prefer the old approach in the studio or are you fine with how things are going now?
DJ L.E.S: «Of course I prefer the old approach, ‘cause you can have something to say if you don’t like it. Now you just have to send it and whatever they send you back, you’ve got to take it. Sitting in the studio with the artist and having a conversation before recording is the normal way we would like to follow, but nobody has time no more and the artists are very busy.»
Avete detto che la tecnologia si sta evolvendo molto velocemente e gli artisti ora registrano dal telefono. Preferite il vecchio approccio di registrazione in studio o il nuovo?
DJ L.E.S: «Ovviamente preferisco il vecchio approccio, perchè lì puoi dire se qualcosa non ti va bene e la vuoi cambiare. Ora devi solo inviare la traccia e devi farti andare bene qualunque cosa ti mandano, anche se non ti piace. Sedersi in studio con l’artista e avere una conversazione prima di registrare è la normale procedura che preferiamo seguire, ma adesso nessuno ha più tempo e gli artisti sono molto occupati.»
