Nel corso della nostra intervista a Ivorian Doll, abbiamo parlato di musica, fede e politica.
Ivorian Doll è la nuova ospite internazionale di Rapologia. IVD ha da poco iniziato a muovere i primi passi nell’industria musicale, imponendosi come una delle promesse migliori del rap britannico.
Nel corso della nostra chiacchierata, abbiamo avuto modo di parlare delle sue ispirazioni, del suo prossimo EP e di molto altro. Lasciamo quindi la parola alla nostra special guest… buona lettura!
First off, congratulations on your Daily Duppy Freestyle: you nailed it! Let’s start from the beginning of your career. I know you were a youtuber before getting into music. What gave you the confidence to pursue a musical career?
Anzitutto, congratulazioni per il Daily Duppy Freestyle: hai spaccato! Partiamo dall’inizio della tua carriera. So che eri una youtuber prima di dedicarti alla musica. Cosa ti ha dato la fiducia di intraprendere una carriera musicale?
«I think ‘cause at the time I was with my friend and we was in a duo. So at the time I think I was confident to do it because I wasn’t by myself. Otherwise I wouldn’t have started it because I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do alone and I didn’t even want to be a rapper anyway.»
«Penso che il motivo sia perché, a quel tempo, lavoravo con una mia amica ed eravamo in un duo. Quindi penso che, a quel tempo, avessi la fiducia perché non ero da sola. Altrimenti, non avrei mai iniziato perché non avrei avuto la sicurezza di farlo da sola e non volevo nemmeno fare la rapper.»
Speaking of your biggest inspirations, who do you look up to? What have you learnt from these artists?
Parlando delle tue ispirazioni principali, a chi ti rifai? Cosa hai imparato da questi artisti?
«I look up to Nicki Minaj the most and then Megan Thee Stallion. The reason is why Nicki has been one of the first females who can actually hold that title for so long: she is really pretty, she got an amazing pen game, amazing flow, amazing bars, such a strong woman. And Megan as well because Megan has a lot of stage presence and she has done so much in such little time. They are very good people to look up to.»
«Mi ispiro soprattutto a Nicki Minaj e poi anche a Megan Thee Stallion. La ragione è perché Nicki è stata una delle prime donne a tenere quel titolo per molto tempo: è molto bella, la sua scrittura è pazzesca così come il flow e le sue barre, una donna veramente forte. Anche Megan perché Megan sa come stare sul palco ed ha fatto tantissimo in così poco tempo. Sono ottime persone alle quali guardare.»
What’s your biggest goal as a woman in the music industry?
Qual è il tuo obiettivo principale come donna nell’industria musicale?
«My biggest goal is to be a global international artist. I wanna be the one that kinda builds the bridge from the United Kingdom to the USA femalewise.»
«Il mio obiettivo principale è essere un’artista di fama internazionale. Voglio essere quella che, in qualche modo, costruirà il ponte tra il Regno Unito e gli USA per quanto riguarda le donne.»
Let’s talk about your upcoming debut EP: is it titled Drill Print, innit? And what can we expect soundwise?
Parliamo del tuo imminente EP di debutto: si chiama Drill Print, vero? Cosa possiamo aspettarci in merito al sound?
«No, I’ve changed the name but I want the name to come out when the EP comes out so that is going to be a surprise. I don’t wanna box myself and be called a drill artist – because I’m not – so when the project comes out there’s gonna be like some drill beats and the rest of them is gonna be more hip-hop: an american sound but british as well. It’s gonna show the variety of the music that I can do.»
«No, ho cambiato il nome, ma voglio che si sappia il nome quando uscirà l’EP: sarà una sorpresa. Non voglio incasellare me stessa ed essere definita un'”artista drill” – perché non lo sono. Quindi quando il progetto uscirà, ci saranno alcune basi drill ed il resto sarà più hip-hop: un sound americano, ma anche britannico. Dimostrerà la varietà di musica che posso fare.»
When are we getting the EP?

«Hopefully next year, beginning of next year.»
«Speriamo il prossimo anno, all’inizio del prossimo anno.»
I saw on social medias that you are currently working with Iggy Azalea. Can we expect other international collaborations?
Ho visto sui social che stai lavorando con Iggy Azalea. Possiamo aspettarci altre collaborazioni internazionali?
«Yeah, you can expect others but the one with Iggy is definitely coming. I was really shocked when she reached out to me. I was like “What? How did you even find me?” and she said “Oh, I saw you! I heard Rumours!”. A song with DreamDoll is in the works as well. I am really excited about all these collaborations.»
«Sì, potete aspettarvene altre, ma quella con Iggy uscirà sicuramente. Ero letteralmente scioccata quando si è messa in contatto con me. Le ho chiesto “Cosa? Come hai fatto a trovarmi?” e lei “Oh, ti ho visto! Ho sentito Rumours!”. C’è anche una canzone con DreamDoll in lavorazione. Sono molto felice riguardo a tutte queste collaborazioni.»
Talking about visuals, how much important do you think they are?
Parlando di video, quanto pensi siano importanti?
«Visuals are very important. When I was growing up, I loved watching Missy Elliott and Ciara videos. People can hear the song but they like to see things as well. Music is all about your creative input and a video shows how creative you can be and how you can perform and bring the song to life.»
«I video sono molto importanti. Quando ero piccola, amavo guardare i video di Missy Elliott e Ciara. Le persone possono sentire la canzone, ma voglione anche vedere certe cose. La musica riguarda il tuo potenziale creativo ed un filmato mostra quanto creativo puoi essere e come ti puoi esibire e rendere viva la traccia.»
How is your recording process like? Are you used to starting from beats or from lyrics?
Com’è il tuo processo creativo? Sei solita partire dalle basi o dalle parole?
«If I am at home, sometimes randomly lyrics come in my head and I write it down. Sometimes even with a beat, I write something at home. Then, when the beat comes overseas, if it doesn’t go I mix and match, I fix it around. More time now I have to go and listen to a beat. I listen to so many beats and, as soon as I hear a beat, I know exactly the one that is for me and I’ll start writing. I have to find the right beat first in order to make a perfect song.»
«Se sono a casa, talvolta – a caso – le parole mi vengono in mente e le metto per iscritto. Talvolta anche con una base, scrivo qualcosa a casa. Poi, qundo il beat viene da Oltreoceano, se non funziona, lo aggiusto e adatto. La maggior parte delle volte, ora come ora, devo ascoltare una base. Ascolto così tanti beat e, non appena ne sento uno, so esattamente qual è per me ed inizio a scrivere. Devo anzitutto trovare il giusto beat per creare la canzone perfetta.»
What are you planning for next year? We already said that you are working on the EP…
Cosa stai organizzando per il prossimo anno? Abbiamo già detto che stai lavorando all’EP…
«Yeah and I am going to go on tour. We are planning my tour right now. Hopefully I will do a tour across Europe if COVID-19 will stop. And I am going to do the big shows like Wireless and Rolling Loud.»
«Sì ed andrò in tour. Stiamo pianificando il mio tour proprio ora. Speriamo di riuscire a fare un tour europeo se il COVID-19 si fermerà. Prenderò anche parte ai grandi show come il Wireless e il Rolling Loud.»
What are your feelings about the american situation related to the BLM movement?
Cosa pensi dell’attuale situazione americana legata al movimento BLM?
«I feel it’s very important and I am very happy that artists and big people who have a big platform are speaking about it as well because the youngest generations need to know what is going on with the BLM movement. There are a lot of things going on! More happens there than here and I look at America and I’m like “Wow”. They actually go through so much and I see the way sometimes black people are treated and how they are so scared of police officers. Not that we are not scared of them but the way the police treats people over there is completely different over here. I feel it’s important for other people to be aware of what is actually going on.»
«Penso che sia importante e sono felice che artisti e persone importanti ne parlino perché le generazioni più govani devono sapere quel che sta accadendo con il movimento BLM. Stanno accadendo un sacco di cose! Più cose accadono là che qua e penso “Wow”. Subiscono così tante cose e vedo il modo il cui talvolta le persone nere sono trattate e quanto hanno paura degli ufficiali di polizia. Non è che qua non li temiamo, ma il modo in cui la polizia tratta le persone in America è completamente diverso da qua. Penso che le persone debbano essere coscienti di quanto sta accadendo.»
What about the way the music industry has been treating black women? I’m thinking about the Megan Thee Stallion situation…
Cosa mi dici del modo in cui l’industria musicale sta trattando le donne nere? Sto pensando a quanto accaduto a Megan Thee Stallion…
«Personally I feel like what Megan said – the most disrespected person is the black woman – is because somebody got shot in their foot and it’s like the way the medias treated it and people called her a liar I don’t think it would be the same if it was otherwise or if it was someone different. I think people took it as a joke, people laughed about it – it wasn’t funny – and I think she didn’t deserve that. Even men were saying “Free Tory!”. I think Megan is a really strong woman because she keeps going but what happened to her is not good. And women need to be respected more because if it was a man it would be treated completely differently anyway.»
«Personalmente, penso che quanto detto da Megan – la donna nera è la persona alla quale si manca più di rispetto – derivi dal fatto che qualcuno è stato ferito con una pistola nel piede ed il modo in cui i media hanno trattato la questione, le persone l’hanno chiamata bugiarda, non penso che sarebbe accaduto lo stesso se fosse stato altrimenti o se fosse stato qualcun altro. Le persone lo hanno preso come uno scherzo, ne hanno riso – non era divertente – e non penso che se lo meritasse. Anche gli uomini dicevano “liberate Tory!”. Penso che Megan sia una donna molto forte perché continua ad andare avanti, ma quel che le è accaduto non va affatto bene. Le donne devono essere rispettate maggiormente perché, se si fosse trattato di un uomo, la questione sarebbe stata gestita in maniera completamente differente.»
How can we stand by women and help them to make a real change not only within the music industry but also within our society?
Come possiamo stare al fianco delle donne ed aiutarle ad imprimere un cambiamento non solo nell’industria musicale, ma anche nella nostra società?
«I feel like we are still working on it. Women are getting more recognition and they are becoming more dominant in the music industry especially in America. More females are on top: Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Nicki, Mulatto. I feel like if we just give them more support in their music maybe they should talk more about what is going on, more lyrics would be about female empowerment. If they talked more about female empowerment, they would spread the message. Take WAP for example: people are complaining about it but two strong and powerful women came together and made an amazing song. More female collaborations and more females talking about being treated equally to the men.»
«Ci stiamo ancora lavorando. Le donne stanno ottenendo più spazio e stanno divenendo più predominanti nell’industria musicale specialmente in America. Ci sono più donne in vetta: Megan, Doja, Nicki, Mulatto. Se le supportassimo di più nella loro musica, probabilmente parlerebbero di più di quanto sta accadendo, più canzoni riguarderebbero il female empowerment. Se parlassero di più di questo, diffonderebbero il messaggio. Pensa a WAP, per esempio: le persone se ne lamentano, ma due donne forti e potenti hanno unito le forze ed hanno creato una canzone fenomenale. Più collaborazioni tra donne e più donne che parlino dell’essere trattate equamente rispetto agli uomini.»
Speaking of the british rap scene, do you think that women are getting more recognition?
Parlando della scena rap britannica, pensi che le donne stiano ottenendo più spazio?
«I don’t know. I feel we are still getting there. Personally, compared to the american scene, I don’t think we are. I feel that it will happen but men are still dominating right now. Here in the UK we still have a lot to do.»
«Non saprei. Penso che dobbiamo ancora arrivarci. Personalmente, rispetto alla scena americana, non penso che lo stiano ottenenendo. Penso accadrà, ma gli uomini stanno ancora dominando la scena. Qui nel Regno Unito abbiamo ancora molto da fare.»
I know that you are not an american citizen but what do you think about Kanye West running for president? How was your reaction like?
So che non sei una cittadina americana, ma cosa pensi del fatto che Kanye West si sia candidato come presidente? Qual è stata la tua reazione?
«I am not too involved in that type of question because I am from the UK, but he has a voice. People make Kanye seem crazy but I genuinely don’t think he is. I feel he has a lot to say. Kanye is running for president? He can do that! Let’s see where he goes.»
«Non sono troppo coinvolta in quel tipo di questione perché vengo dal Regno Unito, ma ha una voce. Le persone lo fanno sembrare pazzo, ma sinceramente non penso che lo sia. Penso che abbia molto da dire. Kanye vuole diventare presidente? Può farlo! Vediamo dove arriva.»
You have a strong relationship with God. How does your faith influence your decisions when it comes to your career?
So che hai una forte relazione con Dio. In che modo la tua fede influenza le decisioni relative alla tua carriera?
«I do have a strong relationship with God and my dad is a pastor as well. And I don’t know if you are spiritual but God gives you dreams and stuff. I ask God a lot and before I do anything I put God first. I ask Him to direct me to my next song, to the next thing and you see things falling into place. There is no concidence because it was meant to be that way and I believe everything happens for a reason. So when things do happen I am like “Ok, that was God!”. I lean everything on God and even if something bad happens it’s for a reason. When you trust God whetever negative things happen it will always end up being something positive. If something negative happens I pray, if I don’t know what song to put out I pray and I just get messages.»
«Sì, è vero e mio padre è persino un pastore. Non so se tu sia religioso, ma Dio ti manda sogni e roba del genere. Chiedo tante cose a Dio e prima di fare qualunque cosa metto Lui al primo posto. Gli chiedo di indirizzarmi verso la mia prossima canzone, verso la prossima cosa e vedi tutte le cose andare al posto giusto. Non esiste la coincidenza perché è fatto per essere così e credo che qualunque cosa accada per un motivo. Quindi, quando le cose accadono penso “Oh, è stato Dio!” Affido tutto a Lui ed anche quando accade qualcosa di brutto accade per un motivo. Quando ti fidi di Dio, qualunque cosa negativa ti accada diventerà qualcosa di positivo. Se succede qualcosa di brutto prego, se non so quale canzone lanciare prego e ricevo dei messaggi.»
